INTRODUCTION

The Department of Biochemistry offers a degree programme, Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with Honours. The aim of this programme i sto produce Biochemists who have strong basic knowledge. critical thinking, technical skills and soft skills (communication, leadership and teamwork skills) in the field of biochemistry.

In this programme, student will learn basic and applied biochemistry courses including biological chemistry, biomolecules, enzymology, metabolism of biomolecules, hormone biochmestry, food biochemistry, plant biochemistry, animal tissue biochemistry, environmental biochemistry, principles of metabolomics, biochemistry animal toxicology and data science in biochemistry. choosing a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with Honours can open up a world of exciting opportunities for you.

The program spans eight semesters (four years) with a minimum of 128 credits required for graduation. It utilizes Student-Centered Learning (SCL) methods, blending theory and practical experience through lectures, tutorials, seminars, industrial training, study visits, case studies, fieldwork, and research projects.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(GENERAL UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS)

Matriculation/Foundation Graduates

  • Possess a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with a credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia (including July paper) and a pass in History (from 2013 onwards); AND

  • Pass KPM Matriculation/UM Science Foundation/UiTM Foundation/UPM Agricultural Science Foundation/UKM Foundation with a minimum CGPA of 2.00AND

  • Achieve at least Band 1.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for exams from Session 1, 2021, or Band 1 for exams up to 2020 (within the validity period at the time of application).

STPM Graduates

  • Possess an SPM with a credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia (including July paper) and a pass in History (from 2013 onwards); AND

  • Pass the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and at least a Grade C in three (3) subjects, including General Studies (Pengajian Am); AND

  • Achieve at least Band 1.0 in MUET (Session 1, 2021 onwards) or Band 1 (pre-2020).

Diploma/Equivalent Graduates

  • Possess an SPM with a credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia (including July paper) and a pass in History (from 2013 onwards); AND

  • Hold a Diploma from a Public University/Polytechnic/IPTS/Malaysia Skills Diploma (DKM)/Malaysian Advanced Skills Diploma (DLKM) or other qualifications recognized by the Malaysian Government and approved by the University Senate; OR

  • Pass STPM 2023 or earlier with at least a Grade C in three (3) subjects, including General Studies; OR

  • Pass Matriculation/Foundation 2023 or earlier with a minimum CGPA of 2.00OR

  • Pass Malaysian Sports School Pre-U/GCE A-Level/International Baccalaureate Diploma/Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) or other equivalent qualifications; AND

  • Achieve at least Band 1.0 in MUET (Session 1, 2021 onwards) or Band 1 (pre-2020).

 

PROGRAMME-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Matriculation/Foundation Graduates

  • Minimum Grade B- in the following subjects; Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics; OR

  • Minimum Band 3.0 in MUET (Session 1, 2021 onwards) or Band 3 (pre-2020).

STPM Graduates

  • Minimum Grade B- in the following subjects; Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics; OR

  • Minimum Band 3.0 in MUET (Session 1, 2021 onwards) or Band 3 (pre-2020).

Diploma Graduates

  • Possess a Diploma (Level 4, MQF) in the related field or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 3.00AND

  • Minimum Band 3.0 in MUET (Session 1, 2021 onwards) or Band 3 (pre-2020).

 

INTERNATIONAL ADMISSION

GENERAL QUALIFICATION FOR ADMISSION

  • Have received a National Higher School Certificate (or an Advanced Level or the equivalent of 12 years of basic education) with the grade 80% and above; OR
  • Have obtained Matriculation/Foundation Certificate from recognised institution with at least aCGPA of 3.00; AND
  • Have also fulfilled the specific programme requirements.

 

SPECIFIC PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS

Applying with National Higher School/ A Level or Equivalent

  • Have received a CGPA of 3.00/4.00 or average percentage of 80%; AND
  • A minimum grade B in the following subjects; Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics; AND
  • Have obtained one (1) of the English Language Proficiency qualifications as follows: MUET Band 3.0 or IELTS Band 5.5 or TOEFL score 500 (PBT) / 60 (IBT) / 176 (CBT) or CIEP Level 107 at ELS UPM; AND
  • Pass interview session.

Applying with Matriculation/Foundation Studies (recognised institution)

  • Have received a CGPA of 3.00/4.00; AND
  • A minimum grade B in the following subjects; Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics; AND
  • Have obtained one (1) of the English Language Proficiency qualifications as follows: MUET Band 3.0 or IELTS Band 5.5 or TOEFL score 500 (PBT) / 60 (IBT) / 176 (CBT) or CIEP Level 107 at ELS UPM; AND
  • Pass interview session.

Applying with Diploma (recognised institution)

  • Have received a CGPA of 3.00/4.00; AND
  • Have obtained one (1) of the English Language Proficiency qualifications as follows: MUET Band 3.0 or IELTS Band 5.5 or TOEFL score 500 (PBT) / 60 (IBT) / 176 (CBT) or CIEP Level 107 at ELS UPM; AND
  • Pass interview session.

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

Industrial Training for the Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with Honours (BCH4905) is offered during the final semester. This timing ensures that final-year students have completed nearly all required credits for graduation, allowing them to engage more effectively with their host agencies. Based on industry recommendations, the 12-credit (0+12) Industrial Training is mandatory and is completed during Semester 8.
