Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology with Honours

  • Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is first offered at the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology in 1986 and later has been placed under the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (FBSB) that was established on 1 August 2004. Under FBSB, the name of the program has been changed to Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology with Honors and offered by the Department of Bioprocess Technology. The program is conducted on a full-time basis at the campus of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang. The duration of the program is eight semesters (four years) with a minimum credit of 126 to graduate.

This program is conducted using a student-centered learning (SCL) method that includes theories and practices through lectures, tutorials, seminars, industrial training, field trips, case studies, fieldwork and research projects.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

University General Rules

Graduates from Matriculation/Asasi

  1. Passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)/equivalent with Hons in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia or Hons in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July Paper and passed History subject (accounted since 2013);
  2. Passed KPM Matriculation/Asasi Sains UM/Asasi UiTM/ Asasi Sains Pertanian UPM with at least CGPA 2.00;
  3. Achieved at least Band 1 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

STPM holder

  1. Passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)/equivalent with Hons in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia or Hons Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia Julai Paper and passed History subject (accounted since 2013);
  2. Passed Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) Examination with at least CGPA 2.00 and achieved at least:
  • Gred C (NGMP 2.00) General Studies subject; and
  • Gred C (NGMP 2.00) in two others subjects
  • Achieved at least Band 1 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

 Diploma candidates

  1. Passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)/equivalent with Hons in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia or Hons in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July Paper and passed History subject (accounted since 2013);
  2. Obtained Diploma UA/ Politeknik/ IPTS/ Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM), Diploma Lanjutan Kemahiran Malaysia (DLKM) or others qualification recognized by Malaysian Government and approved by IPTA Senate;

Or

  1. Passed Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) Examination year 2018 or before with at least CGPA 2.00 and achieved at least;
  • Gred C (NGMP 2.00) in Pengajian Am subject;
  • Gred C (NGMP 2.00) in two (2) others subjects;

Or

  1. Passed Matriculation examination year 2018 or before with at least PNGK 2.00;

Or

  1. Passed Sekolah Sukan Malaysia/GCE A-Level/ International Baccalaureate Diploma/Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) or others qualification recognized by Malaysian Government and approved by IPTA Senate;

and

  1. Achieved at least Band 1 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

Programme Special Requirement

Graduates from Matriculation/Asasi

  1. Achieved at least Gred B (00) at matriculation/Asasi level in Biology and achieved at least Gred B- (2.67) at matriculation/Asasi level in Chemistry

Or

  1. Achieved at least Gred B (00) at matriculation/Asasi level in Chemistry and achieved at least Gred B- (2.67) at matriculation/Asasi level in Biology

and

  1. Achieved at least Band 3 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 
STPM holder

  1. Achieved at least Gred B (NGMP 3.00) at STPM level in Biology and achieved at least Gred B- (NGMP 2.67) at matriculation/Asasi level in Chemistry

Or

  1. Achieved at least Gred B (NGMP 3.00) at matriculation/Asasi level in Chemistry and achieved at least Gred B- (NGMP 2.67) at matriculation/Asasi level in Biology

And

  1. Achieved at least Band 3 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET).


Diploma candidates

  1. Diploma in suitable field or other qualification approved by UPM Senate.

and

  1. Achieved at least Band 3 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

INTERNATIONAL ADMISSION

GENERAL QUALIFICATION FOR ADMISSION

Applicant who is interested in pursuing his/ her studied at UPM must fulfil the following: To have received a National Higher School Certificate (or an Advanced Level or th equivalent of 12 years of basic education) with the grade 80% and above.

or A Diploma from recognized Institutions with at least a CGPA of 3.00.

 

SPECIFIC PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS

  1. A minimum of Grade B (GP 3.00) at STPM level or its equivalent in Biology
  2. A minimum of Grade B- (GP 2.67) at STPM level or its equivalent in Chemistry

OR

  1. A minimum of Grade B (GP 3.00) at STPM level or its equivalent in Chemistry
  2. A minimum of Grade B- (GP 2.67) at STPM level or its equivalent in Biology

 

  • Programme Outcomes

The learning outcomes of the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology with Honors are divided into two based on the learning outcomes specified by the Program Standards: Biotechnology and learning outcomes according to the University's requirements based on the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). Overall, after following this program, graduate will be able to:

  1. exhibit knowledge and comprehensive understanding in biotechnology;
  2. use basic equipment related to biotechnology;
  3. analyze, synthesize, and integrate knowledge and information;
  4. apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills;
  5. conduct basic guided research;
  6. demonstrate the ability to seek, adapt and provide solutions to address biotechnology challenges and problems;
  7. practice the concept of lifelong learning;
  8. demonstrate awareness and understanding of the basic issues of entrepreneurship and commercialization, ethics, legislation and social related to biotechnology;
  9. show their communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Career Information

Career in biotechnology is noteworthy for supporting the development of various industries in Malaysia, these include agriculture, livestock, food, medicine, manufacturing, and waste management. This is in line with The National Biotechnology Policy 2005-2020, which aims to develop the biotechnology field as one of the engine of economic growth. The policy focuses on the development of three economic sectors; namely agriculture, healthcare, and industrial manufacturing, as well as supporting the development of ecosystems that cater for scientific, academic and business communities. Career path:

Internship Information

Industrial training for program under Bachelor of Biotechnology Science with Honors (course code: BTC4901) will be offered to the students in their final semester (semester 8) following the completion of Bachelor’s Dissertation course. Students will be given the opportunity to seek out for internship that are in line with their interests and training suitability towards the program. Training venues generally encompass of but not limited to; research institutions or diagnostic testing, monitoring, and quality control laboratories under the government agencies, private commercial laboratories, manufacturing companies which centre on biomanufacturing and bioprocessing activities, plantation companies, and service-providing companies offering consultation, education, and training in biotechnology related fields. Placement selection and supervision of students during the training period will be jointly conducted by the department coordinator with the supervisor or manager of the agency or company concerned. Exposure to this industry training will increase the marketability of graduates as students will be able to practice their knowledge of the work processes and can grasp the nature of biotechnology career more effectively.
