Biotech UPM Promotes the Innovation

Innovation and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) are essential elements in teaching and learning. On April 8-10th, 35 students and two lecturers; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Azmi bin Shaharuddin and Dr. Amir Syahir bin Amir Hamzah of Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia, organized a service learning activity for students of form 3, 4 and 5 of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsan Saujana Utama, Sungai Buloh (SMKSU).

Five themes were selected; i) respiration, ii) environmental biochemistry, iii) biological chemistry, iv) biochemical system of carriers in organisms, and v) body coordination systems. Many interactive and fun activities such as video shows, Kahoot, Giant snakes and ladders puzzle mat, darts, and biochemistry teaching songs were specially performed by Biochemistry students.

In other occasion, on April 14th, SMKSU, which is under school adoption programme by Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia, has won several awards in the International Innovation Creativity & Technology Exhibition (i2CREATE) 2019 which took place in Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The awards won included the Gold Award, and the Special Award in Biotechnology. The products submitted in this contest were the joint research between the lecturers and students of Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UPM.
