The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is first offered at the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology in 1986 and later has been placed under the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (FBSB) that was established on 1 August 2004. Under FBSB, the name of the program has been changed to Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology with Honors and offered by the Department of Bioprocess Technology. The program is conducted on a full-time basis at the campus of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang. The duration of the program is eight semesters (four years) with a minimum credit of 126 to graduate.
This program is conducted using a student-centered learning (SCL) method that includes theories and practices through lectures, tutorials, seminars, industrial training, field trips, case studies, fieldwork and research projects.

Applicant who is interested in pursuing his/ her studied at UPM must fulfil the following: To have received a National Higher School Certificate (or an Advanced Level or th equivalent of 12 years of basic education) with the grade 80% and above.

Career Information
Career in biotechnology is noteworthy for supporting the development of various industries in Malaysia, these include agriculture, livestock, food, medicine, manufacturing, and waste management. This is in line with The National Biotechnology Policy 2005-2020, which aims to develop the biotechnology field as one of the engine of economic growth. The policy focuses on the development of three economic sectors; namely agriculture, healthcare, and industrial manufacturing, as well as supporting the development of ecosystems that cater for scientific, academic and business communities. Internship Information
Industrial training for program under Bachelor of Biotechnology Science with Honors (course code: BTC4901) will be offered to the students in their final semester (semester 8) following the completion of Bachelor’s Dissertation course. Students will be given the opportunity to seek out for internship that are in line with their interests and training suitability towards the program. Training venues generally encompass of but not limited to; research institutions or diagnostic testing, monitoring, and quality control laboratories under the government agencies, private commercial laboratories, manufacturing companies which centre on biomanufacturing and bioprocessing activities, plantation companies, and service-providing companies offering consultation, education, and training in biotechnology related fields. Placement selection and supervision of students during the training period will be jointly conducted by the department coordinator with the supervisor or manager of the agency or company concerned. Exposure to this industry training will increase the marketability of graduates as students will be able to practice their knowledge of the work processes and can grasp the nature of biotechnology career more effectively.
The curriculum structure is developed based on the components and guidelines set by the Program Standards: Biotechnology to fulfill the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Universiti Putra Malaysia requirements.
