Community Project of BSM4501 Students at Sungai Kabul, Kampung Sesapan Kelubi, Beranang, Selangor

A total of 37 undergraduate students of BSM4501 (Applied Plant Cell and Tissue Culture) from the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology had recently participated in the Community Project at Sungai Kabul, Kampung Sesapan Kelubi, Beranang, Selangor on 27th November 2018. The activity was also joined by Dr. Nadiya Akmal Baharum and Dr. Lai Kok Song as the lecturers of the course as well as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Janna Ong Abdullah, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Aqlima Ahmad and Dr. Nur Adeela Yasid as researchers involved.

The objective of this activity was to help improving the environment of Kampung Sesapan Kelubi via cleaning of the village and river compounds. The Department with the joint effort by researchers of National River Care Fund headed by Assoc. Prof. Janna Ong Abdullah also plan a long-term project to plant suitable plants for bioremediation alongside the river. Through this program, the students were able to apply the knowledge they learnt in class on nature preservation and bioremediation using plants. Besides enhancing their knowledge and inculcating experiential learning, this community project was also able to instil the spirit of cooperation among the students.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia would like to take this opportunity to thank the villagers of Kampung Sesapan Kelubi, especially Tuan Mohamad Samsudin bin Satar (The Chief of Mukim Beranang), Tuan Mohamad Safian bin Haji Alias (The Village Headman of Kampung Sesapan Kelubi), Puan Rogiah binti Nordin (The Village Headman of Kampung Bukit Kepong), Encik Ramlan Chan and Encik Khairul Azizi for their kind cooperation and hospitality. The success of this event is believed to act as a catalyst for more future endeavours between the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and the community of Kampung Sesapan Kelubi, Beranang, Selangor.
