KLESF 2019 is an annual event initiated by the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), and The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). It offers various programmes and competitions to enhance interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among youth as young as 4 years old up to the pre-university.
Associate Professor Dr. Siti Sarah Othman as the Coordinator of the Microbial Biotechnology Laboratory (MBL), Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, together with Associate Professor Dr. Chia Suet Lin from the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BIOTECH) have successfully participated in this event. Together with their active collaboration with Dr. Muhammad Zamir Othman, the head of the FAST-LAB, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), the team had offered more than 10 STEM activities to the students and the public.
The activities ranging from DNA extraction experiment performed by the visitors who extracted their own DNA from their saliva to many others such as slime making, shrink art, self-perfumery and making their own hydrogel for urban farming. The “MBL x BIOTECH” members was sponsored by the Malaysian Society for Molecular Biology and iotechnology through the EduSTEM Community Grant. More than 70,000 visitors from all over Malaysia had participated in this year event.
