Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering

Genetic engineering deals with the manipulation of genes to alter metabolic pathways of cells or organisms while molecular biology is the study of different proteins in these metabolic pathways. Genetic engineering and molecular biology techniques have been used in various fields including medicine, agriculture, animal husbandry and biotechnologies. Manipulation of genes and understanding of their mechanisms has contributed greatly to improved technologies towards curing and prevention of diseases. In the field of agriculture, development of improved crops which led to increased potential global food supply has been made possible by the genetic engineering and molecular biology techniques. The advent of these powerful tools to understand and manipulate metabolic pathways of cells and organisms has allowed for great discoveries across many fields of studies.
