Arbakariya Bin Ariff (A.B. Ariff) is a Professor of Fermentation Technology and Bioprocess Engineering at Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He was born on 9 th of september 1961. He graduated with a Bachelor of Food Science and Technology from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (at present known as Universiti Putra Malaysia) in 1984, M.Phil (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Birmingham, England in 1986 and obtained PhD degree (Bioprocess Engineering) in July 1993 from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, England.
Since 1987, he has involved with more than 100 research projects funded by several agencies such as Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Higher Learning, Land & General Sdn Bhd, NEDO, Japan, PMI2 UK, National Biotechnology Directorate and UPM. Initially, his projects were related to the development of biomanufacturing process for production of biotechnology product employing wild and recombinant microbial strains. The research has been extended to the use of plant cells and microalgae. He has been involved in research at international level and has developed many international linkages. One of the biggest linkages is the Collaborative Research and Exchange Scientist Program between Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines sponsored by the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS). He is also actively involved in consultation work and has been appointed as an advisor and a consultant to many biotechnology companies for the development of industrial process for production of commercial biotechnology products. With very huge research grants, he managed to actively supervise postgraduate students. To date, 25 PhD and 45 MSc students have been graduated under his main supervision. He has also published more than 200 papers in refereed journal
He has been appointed as Head of Laboratory of Enzyme and Microbial Technology (LEMT), Institute of Bioscience, UPM, in 2001 and then acted as Head of Department of Bioprocess Technology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences in 2004. In 2009, he has been acted as the Deputy Dean (Academic) and since 2016, he has been acted as the Dean, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UPM. Currently, he was also heading the Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing Research Centre at UPM.
