Faculty History

The Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science (BioTech UPM) was established on 1 August 2004 which combines two departments, namely the Department of Biotechnology at the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology and the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies. With the establishment of BioTech UPM, all activities involving biotechnology at UPM can be coordinated under one administration. Since its inception, BioTech UPM consists of four departments consisting of:

1. Department of Bioprose Technology
2. Department of Cell and Molecular Biology
3. Department of Biochemistry
4. Department of Microbiology

Each department offers core and elective courses as their respective department study programs. Apart from teaching, academic officers are also involved in research, weighing services and consulting. All academic officers at BioTech UPM are experienced and have extensive technical skills in their respective fields of expertise involving the field of Biotechnology.
Current statistics, BioTech UPM has a total of 128 staff members including 67 Management & Professional Group (Academic), 9 Management & Professional Group (Non-Academic) and 52 Implementing Group. While the Academic Management & Professional Group consists of 9 Professors, 34 Associate Professors and 24 Senior Lecturers.
BioTech UPM offers four academic programs at the Undergraduate level. that is

1. Bachelor of Biotechnology Science with Honours
2. Bachelor of Biochemical Science with Honours
3. Bachelor of Science in Microbiology with Honours
4. Bachelor of Cell and Molecular Biology Science with Honours.

For Graduate studies, BioTech UPM offers Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. Areas of study offered are Animal Cell Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Environmental Biotechnology, Enzyme and Food Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering and Molecular Biology, Industrial Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Microbiology, Nanobiotechnology, Plant Biotechnology and Structural Biology.
